Income tax outstanding demand already paid but not reflected

If you have an outstanding income tax demand that you have already paid but is not reflected on the e-filing portal, it can be a frustrating situation. This can happen due to various reasons, such as a technical glitch, incorrect challan details, or a delay in the system’s update.

Here are the steps you can take to resolve this issue:

1. Respond to the Outstanding Demand on the e-filing Portal:

The Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal has a specific section for this.

  • Log in to your e-filing account.
  • Go to “Pending Actions” and then “Response to Outstanding Demand.”
  • Select the demand you have already paid.
  • Choose the option “Demand is correct and you have paid already.”
  • Enter the challan details, including the Challan Identification Number (CIN), BSR code, serial number, and date of payment.
  • You may also be required to upload a copy of the challan as an attachment.

2. Check Your Form 26AS and AIS:

  • Verify if the tax payment is reflected in your Form 26AS or Annual Information Statement (AIS). These documents provide a consolidated view of all the tax-related transactions made under your PAN.
  • If the payment is not reflecting here, it could indicate a problem with the payment itself, such as an error in the challan details entered during payment.

3. Rectification Request:

  • If the demand is a result of a processing error by the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC), you can file a rectification request.
  • This option is available on the e-filing portal under the “Services” menu.
  • You can use this to correct mistakes that are “apparent from the record,” such as a mismatch in the tax credit claimed.

4. Contact the Income Tax Department:

  • If the online options don’t work, you can contact the Income Tax Department for assistance.
  • You can raise a grievance on the e-filing portal, providing all the relevant details and proof of payment.
  • You can also contact the e-filing helpdesk for support.
  • In some cases, you may need to contact your jurisdictional Assessing Officer (AO) with proof of payment.

Important points to remember:

  • Always keep a copy of your tax payment challan as proof.
  • Ensure that the challan details you are entering on the portal are accurate.
  • Be patient, as resolving these issues can sometimes take time.
  • If you have a partial disagreement with the demand, you should pay the undisputed amount first and then raise a response for the remaining portion.

By following these steps, you can effectively address the issue of an outstanding demand that has already been paid and get it corrected on the income tax portal.
